Fort Langley

The Birthplace of British Columbia

Fort Langley is Canada's most historically significant village on the Pacific. Established in 1827 by the Hudson's Bay Company as a fur trading post along the Fraser River, it became an important trading hub where the company exchanged goods with Kwantlen First Nations, part of the broader Stó:lō peoples who lived along the Fraser River for thousands of years. In 1858, during the Fraser River Gold Rush, the British Crown proclaimed the creation of the Colony of British Columbia at Fort Langley, earning the town the nickname "Birthplace of British Columbia."

GMC Triangle — 76-Unit Development & HAP Extension Controversy

Two 3-storey mixed-use buildings (76 residential units) approved 4-3 by Township Council on June 24, 2025 for the Glover–Mary–Church triangle — approximately 40% of Fort Langley's downtown commercial core. Developed by Fort Langley Properties Ltd., the business arm of Mayor Woodward's foundation. Heritage Alteration Permit No. 101218 (issued July 2023) was extended June 2025 to cover this significantly denser project — raising questions about whether a HAP can authorize density increases beyond its original scope under the Local Government Act. No public hearing was held.

History & Stories

Fort Langley's Story

In 1827, the Hudson's Bay Company established Fort Langley on the banks of the Fraser River. For decades it served as the commercial heart of the Pacific Northwest — a fur trading post, salmon cannery, and agricultural centre that predates Canada itself.

On November 19, 1858, Governor James Douglas proclaimed British Columbia a Crown Colony right here — making Fort Langley the literal birthplace of the province that would become Canada's gateway to the Pacific. The fort's strategic location at the confluence of the Salmon and Fraser Rivers made it the hub of an entire civilization. Today, Fort Langley's 64+ designated heritage properties represent one of the most intact 19th-century townscapes in Western Canada.
