Heritage Protection in Fort Langley

Fort Langley is protected by the Township of Langley Heritage Conservation Area Bylaw (No. 3600, 1999) and the Heritage Property Maintenance Standards Bylaw (No. 5376, 2018). All demolition, subdivision, or significant alteration within the HCA requires a Heritage Alteration Permit.

National Historic Site

The highest level of heritage protection in Canada. Applies to places of national significance. Fort Langley NHS is the most prominent example in Langley.

ProvincialBC Government

BC Heritage Register

Provincial recognition of heritage significance. Provides some protection against demolition but requires municipal enforcement to be effective.

Municipal — HCATownship / City

Heritage Conservation Area

A designated area where all properties must comply with design guidelines. The strongest local protection tool — applies to Fort Langley and Murrayville.

Municipal — HAPTownship / City

Heritage Alteration Permit

Required before any demolition, subdivision, or significant alteration of a designated heritage property. The primary enforcement mechanism.

Municipal — CHRTownship / City

Community Heritage Register

A list of properties with heritage value. Listing provides recognition but NOT legal protection — a Heritage Designation Bylaw is needed for enforcement.
