The Story of Langley City

The area now known as Langley City was first settled as 'Innes Corners' and later 'Langley Prairie.' The arrival of the BC Electric Railway in 1910 transformed it into the urban and commercial hub of the region.

Overview

Dissatisfied with the Township's preference for rural interests, Langley Prairie residents voted overwhelmingly for independence in 1954. The City of Langley was incorporated on March 15, 1955. Today, the downtown core faces intense development pressure, with high-rise proposals putting heritage-era buildings on Fraser Highway and 200 Street at risk. The City lacks a formal heritage designation bylaw — a significant gap that heritage advocates are working to address.
