Understanding Heritage Protection Levels
Heritage protection in BC operates at multiple levels. Understanding which level applies to a property determines what protections are in place.
National Historic Site
The highest level of heritage protection in Canada. Applies to places of national significance. Fort Langley NHS is the most prominent example in Langley.
BC Heritage Register
Provincial recognition of heritage significance. Provides some protection against demolition but requires municipal enforcement to be effective.
Heritage Conservation Area
A designated area where all properties must comply with design guidelines. The strongest local protection tool — applies to Fort Langley and Murrayville.
Heritage Alteration Permit
Required before any demolition, subdivision, or significant alteration of a designated heritage property. The primary enforcement mechanism.
Community Heritage Register
A list of properties with heritage value. Listing provides recognition but NOT legal protection — a Heritage Designation Bylaw is needed for enforcement.
